Soil Drainage

Soil must be well drained and well aerated for organic action to take place. This means that it will crumble easily in your hand and that water soaks into it rapidly. If the soil is wet and tightly compacted, it will retard growth and be unsuitable for septic systems. A percolation test will tell you whether the soil drains well.

Soil Acidity

All soils are “sour” (acidic) or “sweet” (alkaline). A neutral soil has a pH of 7. Usually, soils are naturally acidic (low pH) because the by-product of organic decay is hydrogen (acid). Usually, cultivated plants prefer a more neutral soil than is found naturally. Farmers often compensate by spreading crushed limestone to make the soil “sweeter.” You can test for soil acidity easily with a home soil sample test kit.
